Recorded Account

At the end of my Platoon Leader time in B. Company, 3-8 CAV, 3rd BCT, 1st Cavalry Division "GREYWOLF", I wanted to continue as a Platoon Leader- but my time was up in the battalion. Because I had excellent NCOs in our tank platoon (SFC Jackson, SSG Higley, SSG Gould), they advocated on my behalf to our BN XO, MAJ Batista. Being branch detailed to Armor (I was a MI officer) it was a hard sell to keep me on as a PL in the battalion when other officers needed to take a platoon. Batista was a hard Field Grade- but he respected the NCOs in the company (many Desert Storm vets- as he was one as well) and listened to them when they advocated for me. As most things in the Army have more to do with luck and timing than you might expect- a scout platoon opened up in 1-7 CAV (DIV CAV) and I was able to transfer to the squadron. This coin was the first coin I received in the squadron. I don't remember what it was for- but like most things, take care of your Soldiers, work hard, and stay focused on the mission. Good things will come.
